About ConflictWatch Live

ConflictWatch Live is a free, open-source dashboard that visualizes armed conflict events around the world in real time. Our mission is to make global security data accessible, understandable, and actionable for everyone — from journalists and researchers to students and concerned citizens.

The Problem We Solve

Armed conflicts, political violence, and civil unrest affect millions of people worldwide every day. Yet the data about these events is often scattered across academic databases, government reports, and fragmented news coverage. Most tools that aggregate this information are locked behind paywalls or require specialized technical knowledge to use.

ConflictWatch Live bridges this gap by presenting conflict data on an intuitive, interactive map with filtering, search, and timeline capabilities — all completely free, with no account required.

Who Is This For?

How It Works

ConflictWatch Live aggregates data from the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED), one of the most respected and comprehensive conflict event databases in the world. ACLED collects real-time data on political violence and protest events across every country, coding each event by type, date, location, actors involved, and reported fatalities.

Our dashboard fetches this data and plots it on an interactive map powered by Leaflet.js with marker clustering for dense regions. Events are color-coded by severity: red for battles and explosions, orange for violence against civilians, yellow for protests and riots, and blue for strategic developments.

The filter system lets you narrow down events by type, date range, region, and minimum fatality count. The timeline bar at the bottom shows event density per day, allowing you to spot spikes in activity at a glance. All filter states are saved in the URL, making it easy to share specific views with colleagues.

Our Technology

ConflictWatch Live is built with vanilla HTML, CSS, and JavaScript — no heavy frameworks, no build steps, no server costs. This deliberate choice keeps the application fast, lightweight, and free to host indefinitely. The entire codebase is open-source.

Data Accuracy & Limitations

The data displayed on ConflictWatch Live comes directly from ACLED and reflects their methodology and coverage. While ACLED is widely regarded as one of the most reliable sources for conflict event data, no dataset is perfect. Events may be reported with a delay, and fatality figures are often estimates based on available reporting.

ConflictWatch Live is a visualization and exploration tool, not a primary data source. For academic research or official reporting, we strongly recommend cross-referencing with ACLED's own platform and other verified sources.
